When I first started journaling, I tried to follow a super-structured journaling method with specific prompts for the morning & evening.

It sounded great in theory but in reality? I gave up after just 4 days. Why? Because it felt too much like a task!
That’s when I turned to free writing. Just letting my thoughts flow onto the page without any rules.
I set a timer for 10 minutes & wrote whatever came to mind no matter how random or small. Some days, it was about a strange dream I had. On other days I ranted about work frustrations or jotted down things I was excited about.

Physical vs. Digital Journals – Which One is Right for You?
This is another big debate & I have gone back & forth on this over the years.
Do you agree, that there is something special about the physical act of putting pen to paper that intentional process of writing things down?

It helps me tap into my thoughts in a different way and best of all there are no notifications or distractions that get in the way.
However, the downside? Flipping through pages to find an old entry isn’t as easy as hitting Ctrl+F to find that brilliant idea you had 2 months ago!
Digital journals on the other hand are super convenient. They are searchable, always on your phone & let you type faster than you can write.
Apps like Day One or even a simple Google Doc make it easy to journal anytime & anywhere.
The only problem I faced with digital journalling was the screen time before bed which used to mess up my sleep & was way too easy for me to get distracted.
Eventually, I found a mixed approach that worked best. I switched the physical journaling for deep emotional reflections & creative thoughts. I went with digital journaling to jot down quick notes & goal tracking throughout the day.
Whether to opt for a Physical Journal or a Digital Journal is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong choice here, just choose what fits your lifestyle best!

Alright, enough talk, let’s get to the fun practical part! Here’s how to actually start journalling without getting overwhelmed.
1. Pick a Journal (But Don’t Overthink It)
My first journal? A simple $3 notebook from the local store. Nothing fancy! And honestly, that made it easier for me to start.

Sometimes, a beautiful, expensive journal can create pressure to write something “perfect or worthy” when really journaling is just about getting your thoughts down.

2. Set Achievable Expectations (Keep It Simple)
This was my game-changer!
Instead of aiming for “writing 30 minutes every day” (which I know I will never stick to) I started with something ridiculously small. I started with writing just 3 sentences before going to bed.
Just 3 sentences! That’s it. Some nights, those three sentences would turn into 3 pages.
On other nights, I wrote exactly three & called it a day. But because the goal was to keep it simple, I never felt overwhelmed. And that’s the key! Start small so you actually ‘start.’

3. Find Your Perfect Journaling Time and Place
Journaling in the evening works best for me. By then, my day is over, my thoughts have settled, and I can reflect on everything that happened throughout the day.

For some, mornings may be the best time to gather their thoughts. Or perhaps a quick journaling session during your lunch break helps you reset.
Remember, there is no one said time to journal. Experiment until you find what works with your schedule.
I also feel that choosing a cozy spot can make journaling easier & more consistent.
I have created a tiny, cozy little nook in my bedroom with a comfy chair, good lighting & zero distractions.
Now, just sitting there signals my brain that it’s time to slow down & reflect. Finding a dedicated space, even if it’s just a favorite corner, can make journaling feel like a special ritual instead of just another task.
But What Do I Actually WRITE About? (I Struggled With This Too)
This is the most common question I hear about journaling! Staring at a blank page can feel so overwhelming & intimidating.
I remember spending weeks wondering where to start & Here’s what helped me:
Start with the Basics
Don’t overthink it. Just begin with simple facts about your day. Write about what you did, who you met or what you ate. This takes the pressure off & gets your pen moving.
Once you start writing, you will naturally start adding how you felt about these events. And before you know it, your thoughts will start flowing into your journal.
